This Jet J-2530 is the bench top version of the Jet J-2500 – with a few minor differences.
Firstly, the J-2530 is quite a tall drill press for a bench top model. It has an overall height of 39 inches (990mm). Depending on the height of the bench you place it on and your own height you may need a stool to do speed changes. Alternativly make a custom bench.
Secondly it’s heavy. 157 pounds (71kg) heavy. It may require two people to lift it in to place.
Like its sibling it is powered by a 3/4hp motor driving a belt that can be adjusted to give 16 different speeds from 200 – 3630 RPM.
It has a 5/8 keyed chuck and like the J-2500 the spindle spins on permanently lubricated ball bearings. (Note: This chuck may nothold drill bits smaller than 1/8 or 3mm)
The stroke is shorter by a 1/4 inch with full spindle travel at 3 1/8 inches (80mm).
Swing is the same at 15 inches (380mm) but the table dimensions are smaller, measuring 10″ x 10″.
Table tilts 45 degrees to the left and right and rotates 360 degrees.
Oddly, the J-2530 does not have a work light.
Once you get into the 15+ inch bench top drill presses the number of similar machines drops away rapidly.
Because once you get over 15″ swing you are entering in to Floor Standing drill press teritory.
Fifteen inch and bigger drill presses have large base plates, which require a rather large or deep dimensioned bench.
One of the first alternatives to consider is the Jet JDP-15B
The first thing you will notice on the JDP-15 is the table size, it’s large (12-1/2 x 17″). The table is also flat, no edge lip, which makes clamping work down so much easier.
Another thing that is easier on this machine is speed changes. There is a quick release tensioner under the top cover and the belts are poly V.
Something to note: I noticed the US & Australian markets sell these with 5/8 keyed chucks, while those in Europe get keyless chucks.
Another alternative is the Baileigh DP-1512B
It’s more common to see Baileigh machinery in a commercial environment than a home workshop. The DP-1512B has a CV type belt speed setup which gives an almost infinite amount of speeds between 550 to 2500 RPM.
Sometimes it’s the little touches that make the difference. In this case it’s the small tool holder that attaches to the column. Ideal for the chuck key.
Like I mentioned, 15 inch bench top drill presses are not as common as many of the the smaller swing models.
