Floor standing drill presses pick up where many bench top models leave off.
By this I mean, they offer more.
Most floor models have longer spindle travel, 4″ (100 mm) or more.
They have larger work tables which is great for clamping work down, using larger vices and cross slide tables.
A larger work table also means there is more swing room.
Being floor based there is more access around the drill, not limited because of a bench.
Floor standing drill press models often have bigger motors and they have a wider variety of speeds. Most notable is the ability to run slower.
Slower speeds allow for bigger drill bits and hole saws.
And the most obvious it that larger work pieces can fit between the chuck and table or base.
But it is up to the buyer, do you need that extra room, power, travel because usually all that extra amounts to more money as well.
Have a look at the models shown here, check the specifications and make decisions based on your needs.
There is something to note about a floor standing drill press. Some of the lighter models need to be anchored to the floor. These models can be top heavy and have been known to tip over.
All floor standing drill presses shown here are single phase power.
